  His father was Spanish, and his mother was African. People of mixed race were treated very badly at the time he lived. The law of Peru did not allow mixed race people to join the monastery or religious orders, but he was allowed to volunteer around the monastery. Perhaps because of his experience, he was willing to help anyone, regardless of race.
  
  He is the patron saint of racial justice.
